Series 1 · Episode 4

Eva and her Breton guide Tanguy Thomassin explore the vast oyster beds of Cancale, oyster capital of Brittany. Being pummelled by one of the highest tides in Europe makes for fatter, sweeter and healthier oysters. And having once supplied King Louis XVI’s oyster habit, Brittany still supplies half of France. Bretons also boast of plentiful sardines, kelp forests, spiny crabs and the rare cobalt blue lobster. Fished sustainably and cooked on a grill, it's little wonder that this beauty is called the king of lobsters.

Sitting between Germany and France, Alsace is frontier land with a cuisine to match. In Strasbourg, Eva stops off at Brasserie Le Tigre for a beer (brassier means ‘to brew’) and a deliciously creamy tarte flambee. Then there's a trip to guide Coralie Andt’s restaurant, known as a winstub, where French wines can be enjoyed with plenty of cheese and sausage – as well as more sausage with sauerkraut cooked in white Riesling wine. With French tarts in a brasserie that serves German-style beer, and German sausage in a winstub serving French white wine, Alsace is defined by its competing national influences.

Series 1 · Episode 3

Bordeaux’s world-famous vineyards are undergoing a revival as vintners seek to update their wines by introducing new technology and reinventing older traditions. Eva visits Saint-Emilion, where wine production began 1,000 years ago, and enjoys unusual wine pairings - a deep red with fish and a buttery white with cheese. But Bordeaux isn’t just about wine; it has superb produce, including succulent duck and tender beef as well as 200-million-year-old caviar, served with signature bordelaise sauces.
