Zara McDermott · Episode 1

This episode tells the story of Gaia going missing from her aunt’s house just before sunset on a November evening in 2017. Just before she leaves, she makes a last-minute call to her identical twin sister, Maya, then she runs. She’s alone without a coat, phone or medication for her epilepsy and in a state of high distress. After making several emergency calls to police, Gaia’s family believe that a widespread search for her is underway. Days later, after hundreds of volunteers have joined the search, Gaia’s body is found deep in undergrowth on Dancing Ledge. She had died of hypothermia. Zara McDermott wants answers; what or who had she been running from? And could the man that Gaia had briefly been seeing have anything to do with her disappearance?

Zara McDermott · Episode 2

In episode two, Zara McDermott digs deeper into the world that Gaia unwittingly stepped into after she was approached online by an older man. Zara discovers how, in 2014, when Gaia was 16, she was approached by a man five years older than her online, who had a reputation in the local area. Despite multiple warnings from those closest to her, Gaia wanted to help him and they became close. As Zara explores further, she finds that the man had been working with a group of webcammers who saw themselves as entrepreneurs in the world of streaming sex online for paying customers. Zara discovers that these young men were filmed in 2015 for a BBC documentary presented by Mobeen Azhar, looking at the world of webcamming as a forerunner to OnlyFans. It was a light-hearted film at the time, but, as Mobeen says, looking back at the footage, it hid a murky underbelly, and he reveals shocking attitudes towards women held by the men. Zara discovers that one night, after the man who contacted Gaia online invited her to his house, her twin sister and mum received a distressing phone call in the middle of the night to pick Gaia up. Gaia’s twin sister Maya says she instinctively knew that...

Zara McDermott · Episode 3

Zara McDermott discovers that Gaia’s alleged attacker contacted her ten months before she went missing. As her older sister Clara says, the texts were 'inherently threatening' and triggered a mental health crisis. As her attempts to get a restraining order were declined, Gaia spiralled. Within a month of receiving the texts, Gaia was in hospital, sectioned under the Mental Health Act for her own safety. Though Gaia’s alleged rape was dropped by Dorset Police at the time due to a lack of evidence, Gaia’s alleged attacker was imprisoned for other child sex crimes. When Gaia hears that he might be imminently released, it triggers a final crisis, exacerbated by being sent indecent images by a stranger on social media. During the episode, the inquest into Gaia’s death - one of the longest individual inquests in British history - starts to reveal vital clues into her final months and days, unearthing over 50 missed opportunities in her care and search for her. Talking to a key independent mental health witness and the former Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset at the time of her death, Zara puts together the pieces of the jigsaw that led Gaia to run that day, what finally...
